Barbican Bookshop
The Barbican Bookshop on Fossgate is an excellent second-hand book shop which is crammed full of all sorts of out of print titles and a great selection of new books.
It specialises in books on York and Yorkshire, Aviation, Railways and Christianity and has a wonderful selection of bargains scattered throughout its rambling rooms.
The bookshop takes its name from its original location on Walmgate Bar in the 1960s. Walmgate Bar is one of the four medieval gates into York and boasts the finest remaining barbican (a protective extension to the gate) anywhere in the UK. When the shop moved into the city centre in 1967 they decided to keep the name in honour of their historic roots.
