Evil Eye Lounge
In Good Company
For internet access, a city centre location and a funky, alternative cafe experience, try the quirky Evil Eye Lounge on Stonegate. Frequented by Johnny Depp during the filming of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this is clearly one of the trendiest haunts in town.
The historic, charmingly crooked and creaky building matches the cobbled street in which it is situated, giving customers a real feel for the old city of York and its past. The decor is of an East Asian style, and the rooms are filled with colourful ornaments, tapestries and wooden-framed mirrors. Specialising in a huge variety of luscious cocktails, beers and soft drinks, the Evil Eye is also a fun and lively place to start an evening out in York.
Thai Feasts
Opt for a window seat for a lazy hour of people-watching over a coffee, or venture to the top floor for a snug, more intimate atmosphere – perfect during the winter months, though rather close during the summer. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, the Evil Eye serves a delectable Thai menu Monday-Saturday between the hours of 12pm and 9pm, and a robust Sunday roast – with traditional or vegetarian options – each Sunday from 12pm until 6pm. Enter via the downstairs shop during the day, or through a side entrance in the evenings once the shop is closed.
