Castle Museum
Visit Victorian England
York
Castle Museum provides an exquisite insight into the way people used to live
many years ago. It is most famous for having recreated an entire Victorian
street – Kirkgate – which portrays the aesthetics and atmosphere of Victorian
Britain with sound, light and visual effects.
Visitors can walk through the
street and look at the authentic shop fittings displaying Victorian stock, and
can peer through the windows into a perfectly-designed Victorian parlour.
For
an Edwardian experience, visitors are invited to visit Half Moon Court, the
recreation of an Edwardian street which includes a Romany caravan, shops, and a
pub.
How We Used to Live
The
beautiful museum room settings include Moorland cottage of 1850s design,
Jacobean and Georgian dining rooms, a typical 1940s kitchen and even a 1950s style
front room. It is even possible to visit carefully recreated prison cells, to
experience how criminals were treated in the past.
The museum
also houses many displays of historic objects, including items of clothing,
armour, weapons, printing presses and toys.
Named
after the former York Castle, which stood on the same site, the museum has been
open since 1938.
